In the late 1950s the BBC set up the Radiophonic Workshop in order to create electronic sounds for radio and later television. The workshop gathered some of the brightest minds in electronic music and all of the latest equipment (synthesizers began to be commercially produced later). This is the group that created the Doctor Who theme and the soundtrack for Quartermass and the Pit, making this series required listening for anyone interested in the pioneers of early electronic sounds.
